There soon will be other things that run on sugar besides you. Here we’re talking about fuel cells - like a new battery prototype from Sony.
How’s that for eco-friendly: a battery that runs on sugar.
This power set, appropriately shaped like sugar cubes, was one of the seven winners of Time Magazine’s “Best Innovation of the Year” lineup in the Environment category.
The article in Time says that “Sony’s bio cell, unveiled in mid-2007, uses glucose-digesting enzymes to extract electrons from any sugary solution (as with other batteries, the electrons flow around the circuit to generate electricity). Connect four of the 50-milliwatt cells, and you’ve got enough juice to keep your MP3 player humming.”
Some of the other green contest winners were just as unusual, including Xerox’s erasable paper, an earthquake-proof bacterium, bricks made of mercury-laced ash, and other weird but useful inventions.
